Students from 15 Countries Make It to Int’l Quran Competition’s Finals

IQNA – The final round of the 8th edition of the international Quran competition for the Muslim world school students will begin in Tehran on Thursday.

A total of 30 students from 15 countries have qualified for the finals, according to Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammad Hossein Poursani, an Iranian deputy minister of education.

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on Tuesday, he said the finalists are from Afghanistan, Indonesia, Uganda, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Turkey, Tunisia, Senegal, Iraq, Iran, Oman, Gambia, Malaysia, Nigeria, and New Zealand.  

He noted that they have made it to the final round from among 70 contestants in the preliminary stage.

Hojat-ol-Islam Poursani added that ten Quran experts from Iran, Syria, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Lebanon will serve in the panel of judges to evaluate the performances of the contenders in the boys and girls sections.

He went on to say that the competition is held in the categories of Quran recitation and memorization of the entire Quran.

The cleric also said that the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization and the Education Ministry jointly organize the international event.

Also speaking at the press conference was Mikaeil Baqeri, director general of the ministry’s Quran, Etrat and Prayers Department, who noted that there are 17 countries organizing major international Quran competitions in the Muslim world and Iran is the only country that organizes a special international Quran contest for school students.

The competition will be held concurrent with Iran's 40th International Quran Competition in Tehran.
